He shoots! He scores!

He shoots! He scores!

Sorry, I just couldn't resist placing the title overhead here. No this is not hockey, but read on and you'll see the, "the shoot and score" idea of what I mean... :-)

Yesterday before heading out to a golf tee time to play a round together shortly before the dinner hour, the older boys headed for the backyard to use it as a practice driving range.

Several dozen balls were shot off into the wild horizon at the back of the property, and shortly before they completed the ball stash in the bucket, howls of laughter rippled through the airwaves, however, call it a mother's intuition but I just “knew” something wasn’t right!

Sure shooting, our older son cranked his golf ball out yonder, the speed blasted right through my newest bird feeder, spilling all the seed and the bottom tray to the ground. At first I thought he only hit it and the bottom fell off, but then after a much closer inspection, I noticed the REAL damage.

HOLY COW!

Of all people, you have to know the history of this son’s funny business around here, so this was no exception to the rule. This was all rip roaring “hilarious” to the boys and their father of course, but it took me a bit of time to let loose and laugh my head off at the whole wonder of it all. What could be the odds, especially with three acres ahead of them to hit this one particular bird feeder? (shaking my head still)

A hole in one!

Severe storm warnings

Severe storm warnings

The night of the first storm when lightning hit the tree

When the temperature on the thermometer soars to sudden elevations creating hot and muggy highs, it becomes a lung disease sufferer’s worst nightmare.

Normally we aren’t heavily burdened by such thick overheated air until August at best, and merely for a few days around here. However, the sudden influx of hot weather has promoted due caution when watching someone suffer so much, merely trying to do what we all take for granted - sucking back one simple solitary breath of air, something so easy for most of us.

Between having our air conditioning unit humming 24/7 in our home the past two days and fighting to keep cool from the hundred degree plus weather (heat and humidex factor), having the air conditioning in a vehicle running while traveling, and the air conditioning in a work office environment, most people would think all should be well for those suffering from breathing issues. Not so.

One still has to get from point A to point B somehow, and that is when the ground falls out for those who depend on a simple breath of air, or when just a few footsteps ahead imminently becomes a mammoth marathon effort due to humid heat outdoors. This is what happens to my husband when unusual heat and humidity knock at our door, and believe me, it’s all been so very unexpected here and not something of a usual timing during the later spring season.

I’m finding it difficult to feel so very helpless today, watching my husband concentrate so much on each intake breath of air, puffer in hand when necessary, and not be able to offer any possible way to assist him. This is one of those mental and emotionally difficult weekends when I wonder how he copes, or how he remains so very cheerful amidst his trials.

If you live in the west, let me tell you - It’s been so HOT and humid outdoors, the air conditioning cooler temperatures inside the house are definitely where it’s at. Along with the high temperatures, storms have been ravaging the area like nothing even the locals can remember before. Tornadoes have become all too familiar the past few days, and funnel clouds have been reported all over the eastern region. Red alert warnings have surfaced this weekend in the news media, warning everyone near and far of severe (!) thunder storms and tornado possibilities. So far, we’ve not had such warnings while living here in the east, most definitely something else for all of us to take note of.

Three sons at the driving range, two would
later be trapped by a storm while golfing

The timing of it all is just plain ridiculous, just when our son and his family have arrived for a well deserved vacation time with us. Actually, they think it’s great to see such stormy weather, even when this son and another were trapped at the local golf course last night during crazy hundred km/hour winds and torrential rain, all accompanied by tornado weather. To them, it was an inconvenience, but when the golf course granted them free passes to golf another day, and they realized how severe that storm really was later on when the news reports indicated tornadoes actually touching down around here, they became more solemn.

Tornado weather beginnings yesterday..

Today, everyone is making an attempt to remain cool and not think about more tornadoes approaching. The children have learned much about forecasted severe weather reports and what to do in the event they are not near the house for shelter, so overall it’s been a learning curve for everyone, even the adults.

As I type this writing up, I see another storm is beginning to roll in. A bit of a breeze has just kicked up. We’re all watching the skies and trying to remain vigilant.

We’ll be heading to the airport soon so my husband can fly off on business, and I’m saying extra prayers right now he can avoid the impending storm tonight for a safe flight.

Safe and sound

Safe and Sound

After a full day of flying, our son and his family landed safely, late as it was last night. I was very thankful after noticing another storm moving eastward, with lightning filling the skies periodically as we waited outside for their plane to land.

Arriving for a visit

We need to watch this wee one :-)

Friday evening we had another big summer storm, the second weekend in a row in fact, with wild booming thunder directly overhead and forked lightning lighting up the sky. Gee it was close, and getting rather scary. The weekend before another scary storm visited us. It seemed like a typical storm at first complete with the usual thunder, lightning, but then sudden ferocious winds occurred, followed by large chunks of hail. Hail? Yes hail! In hindsight, looking back, it was tornado weather! A few friends have since educated and gave a great reminder that if such a thing happened again, especially when hail accompanies a storm, it won't hurt to get the family down into the basement. Tornado warnings are becoming something in many parts of the country, and very unusual in this part to say the least.

This weekend though, Friday night was gave us a regular type of storm, but one loud thunderous boom was so SCARY, accompanied by a crackling sound, we all ducked simultaneously after jumping out of our skin.

"What was that?"...everyone asked.

"That hit something." I said

Even though we all reacted in a similar way, I was met with the usual "nah" in response to my proposed thought. But, when we woke up yesterday morning and proceeded with the yard work for the weekend, our neighbor caught my hubby telling him about the forked lightning that hit the big beautiful mature willow tree.

Lightning strikes!

“Ah, how can that be, the beautiful willow tree is our favorite”, I thought...but then, I tried to suppress a smart retort like "I told you something was struck! " (smile)

A lightning bolt not only struck the tree, it continued with such force downward that it pierced down the core of a large branch, into the tree trunk, peeling back the bark to expose the inner tree. And then the immense voltage power wove its way into the ground finding our neighbor’s telephone wiring, creating a complete power surge and frying his phone line. The telephone company has been summoned to come out and repair it, and luckily none of our neighbors were on the telephone having a conversation at that moment of a lightning strike.

Lightning traveled down, surging
our neighbor's telephone wiring.

Each time we hear of situations such as this, the reminder of “safety” comes to mind. These opportunities for discussions offer a continued safety response expectations during storms, and more importantly we've been learning even more about tornadoes because of the recent unusual weather conditions.

The children know there can be no shower/bathing when lightning fills the skies. There are no longer going to be telephone conversations in progress, nor computer usages, especially touching a mouse to operate one. Additionally, standing at the window glass is discouraged because someone locally was struck by lightning while watching a storm in his window with rain pounding down on it, another lesson to think about.

Worst of all, hearing about two young people who were walking down a sidewalk in the thick of a storm, rain pelting down was drenching them, but then lightning struck the path before them, the voltage carried towards them and traveled right up into their “Ipod” earbuds, burning them both and damaging their hearing. Both were in critical condition. Very sad.

This tree was very near the house - SCARY!

Summer storms. You either love them or hate them. They are definitely exciting, somewhat entertaining, and occasionally scary for young ones and old ones alike, but oh they can be so dangerous! Take care to ensure your family discusses safety minded options during storms, and then enjoy them if you dare.

Post Note -

Tornado warnings have been in the media today, and tonight when two of our sons went to have a game of golf, a sudden HUGE storm enveloped the area, SCARY was the word from all the little children in our home this day! Everyone became frightened when lightning surrounded the house, forked bolts hitting the ground everywhere. This is so unusual for this area, but apparently we are getting the residuals from the midwest today. And newscasters are announcing this is not the end yet. *gulp*
