Some like it hot....

Winter breakfast duties.

Pease porridge hot!
Pease porridge cold!
Pease porridge in the pot
Nine days old.

Some like it hot,
Some like it cold,
Some like it in the pot
Nine days old!

As we trained our children with duties and responsibilities in the kitchen over the years, all our older children living at home have always been assigned breakfast and/or a lunch meal, to assist the family with this task during our busy weeks.

Through patience, proper instruction and the visual assistance of either mother or a cookbook, each of our eight children eventually learned slowly but surely to create a meal their family wouldn’t mind consuming. On the contrary, there have also been days of course, some plug their noses before taking one morsel from their utensil.

These days, everyone cooks, or bakes, or helps a parent in the kitchen often.

Please sir, may I have some more?

Now that we are in the prime time of winter, a hearty bowl of porridge is usually on the menu. Thursday mornings seems to be the morning for this meal preparation, at least this is when our older son stirs the pot and prepares the hot meal for the rest of the family.

Sometimes fruit and toast appear with the porridge, other times there is something else before us for additional enjoyment. Nevertheless, like clockwork, we can be assured of a hot-stick-to-the-ribs, hearty bowl of hot oatmeal one morning a week, usually on Thursdays.

Kitchen chat while the porridge is cooking

Our oldest daughter who is married with her own children assures me by adding a handful of frozen mixed berries to a nice hot cup of porridge is so delicious, it’s just like having a bowl of apple or fruit crisp. Add some chopped nuts and a bit of coconut, and "Yum"! Oh, and don't forget to use your crockpot if you are in a hurry for this particular morning meal. What a time saver to get it ready the night before and wake up to its aroma filling the house!
