Seasonal changes through my window

Only two months ago,

this was the scene when looking out from this window.

Last week, it appeared vastly different when we peered from the window to see this ...

This week, the view has remained only we have no driveway at all on this side of the house from increasing daily AND nightly continued snow falls.

It's hard to believe we've slipped so dramatically from one season into another.

For sure winter came early this year, and as I type this post, after shoveling from the six inches fallen upon us again last night, the snow plow just zoomed down the road, naturally blocking the end of our driveway up, and it's snowing and beginning to squall outside again!

The strangest part?

Just over 45 minutes south of us, the evidence is remarkably different. Except for a light dusting, they are untouched with snow. Guess we really are living in a snow belt of sorts.

But it's so pretty....grin, grin.

What are the seasonal changes in view from your window today?

Seasonal changes out my window

It's beginning to look a lot like Autumn out there!

The fall palette has sprung forth with golden hues so bright and cheery before the winter dullness will soon appear.

I'm off to walk along the autumn fallen leafy carpet paths today, those around the back of the property when I get out to refill all the bird feeders out yonder.

With camera in hand, there is such a tremendous photo opportunity for me to capture even more colorful shots as each day passes.

Seasonal Changes Out My Window

Wondering ...

Can you spot the difference between these two photos, not just seasonal changes but something else?
smile

If you guessed that the Blue Spruce tree is now gone from its former spot, and been replaced with something else, you've guessed right!

Not only was this tree in dire need of moving away from our home to avoid damage to our concrete foundation by its ever growing and spreading roots, so too were two other "Shade Masters" further along in the same beds near our front door.

What were the former owner/builders thinking by planting such a tree in this garden area?

Weighing a mere 200 pounds (!), the blue spruce was a real laborious job to move. And the other two weighed upwards towards the same poundage.

We actually couldn't do this duty ourselves and hired out. So happy we did that!

Not sure though just what to replace all three trees with, it was off to garden center we went. A lovely suggestion came by way of the garden center landscaper who recommended a "Weeping Lilac Tree" for replacing the spruce, and "Flowering Almond Trees" for replacing the "shade masters".

What a difference these will make, no more concerns over how they might damage our home in the future.

We just love them, so pretty and delicate with their lovely pink blossoms and mauve lilac coloring.

Three weeks later, I'm happy to report, even with our tremendous heat wave since, all are thriving in their new spots. Yay!

Seasonal Changes out my Window

Happy day everyone!

Presently, seasonal changes seem to be unfolding daily before our eyes.

Views from my window include discoveries of many new tree, floral and shrub buds and of course, a plethora of forest floor greenery, all sprouting and exploding everywhere!

One week ago, I was feeling like Paul Bunyan with the sparseness in the photo below;

Sparse forest grounds last week

And now, just look how quickly our grounds have responded to this week's daily stormy rains.

How thirsty all the vegetation seemed to be with accompanying rises on the forest fire alert charts and in the media announcements.

Here's how the landscape has changed in just one week;

Same area earlier this week

And now, after all the sun and rain

It's been great for the greens and grounds to gulp up its hearty share of the sky's offerings. It's just not especially wonderful for our continued efforts of completing the staining of our back deck!

Day four and Day five have now passed, and alas the task of deck coating is forever complete.

Ending of Day 3, hot, humid and WET!

I know I mentioned we were "painting" but let me assure you we have used a "solid stain", and not paint. To realize a sanding and re-painting duty yearly is just no fun, so a few cans of "Behr"solid stain is it.

Ending of Day 4, hot, humid and WET!

Colors we chose for our deck met with a raised eyebrow initially on my husband's face, but I wanted some "color", any color around our home.

We live in a forest setting with a beigy-gray house. I like bright vivid colors myself, so was in need of having "something", "anything" for a color splash to pick it up.

Our deck colors chosen (read; what my husband would agree to) are "Moss Blue" and "Cloud Gray".

The blue is actually a gray green as you can see. I Love it! And, it's so much nicer than gray, gray and more gray.

Ending of Day 5 - after rain in between sessions, now DONE!

Seasonal Changes From my Window

Looking out my window this week, I see signs of a new season which is about to explode with an upcoming plethora of multicolored scented blossoms plus at least a zillion new leaves on all those trees in the distance and on our own property.

A friend reassures me each year that when she lived in Ontario, she could SMELL spring coming.

Now that I've lived here for a few years, I have come to know what she meant by that. When the smelly pew odor from all the local farmers turning over their fields drifts away, the well desired scent of spring will definitely fill the air with its most splendid perfume smells.

Seasonal changes out my window

Snow blankets the ground still this week, having not melted much at all since shortly before Christmas.

We're expected more snow this weekend, and yet as always the sun is peaking just over the ridge out the front of the house yet again today. Another lovely day ahead. Perfect for taking children to the dentist later this afternoon, but I highly doubt they would agree much with me on that one.

I glance out this window often during my days. I love just how the light enters the house from the arched window above.

My husband and I have noticed moisture being retained on the lower end, and without a doubt now we see the window seal has blown on this window and needs replacement. Another smaller arched window in our living room has also a blown seal.

Note to hubby; Make your call today. :)

The Olympics begins this weekend, opening ceremonies will be live on screens all over the world tonight, even though they were televised Feb. 10th already.

A bit of a spoiler comes from a niece who was present there, and two friends who both concur; It was "freaking awesome" was the response. I think that's good, right? They could use our weather about now. I heard it was gloomy and raining there today. Too bad.

Our furry white weasel resident has not been seen since the mad dash episode the other day, thank goodness. It still remains to be seen and we are all wondering where it is, and if it was able to get back outdoors again. Where oh where would his entry hole be coming from? Apparently he could pose a danger around our rabbits, even in their cages, so a few people here are a little nervous about that.

Seasonal Changes Out My Window

Snow outside this window is knee deep (for a tall man)

Living in a geographically cold area, we are in the dead of winter with a base of two feet of snow for the past five weeks, round the clock.

Each day, the fluffy flakes fall. And each day we're able to use a broom to swish much of it off staircases and decks. I must admit to loving the wise choice of purchasing a snowblower last winter shortly after our move here, best decision for sure! Except when it stopped working a few weeks after we bought it and something inside warranted the term "defective".

I've noticed a theme thread on the net these days by viewing folks choosing one word to base their 2010 theme on for their families. Some words make me shudder. Like the word "defective". I've heard it dozens of times over a one year period, fed up with it. New word to eliminate that "D word" will now be - "challenge" because I can handle that one.

Back to winter issues.

It's so pretty when the sun shines and its rays glisten off the snow. We've had super sunny skies now for the eighth day in a row! Beautiful! You can see what I mean by viewing the photos in the post below, sunny but still cold. Tis to be expected. After all it is winter, right?

So, the view from my window today is sunny skies, blue skies, and lotsa snow! I even hear we are expecting a low of -8C in the forecast tomorrow. Why, that's just a chinook or something after enduring many -20C days of frosty nostril hairs for hanky alerts constantly prevailing. :)

Happy Day everyone! What are the seasonal views from your window today? Let me know...

Below, I just had to show you one more wintry view from my office window, the place where I sit and type my blog posts to deliver to you. Isn't this just the best!

Seasonal changes out my window

Baby it's lovely white outside!

And the pretty white fluffy snowflakes softly danced and fell to the ground with gentle rhythmic movements, offering the audience below very magical and spectacular scenes of wintry white within no time at all.

All I wanted to do was tip my head up and take it all in, scenes so lovely for hours and hours to behold.

There's just something about living in the east and experiencing the type of snowy days offered here I didn't enjoy quite so much in the Pacific Northwest.

Seasonal changes out my window

Above; ~ Monday this week...

Above; ~ Tuesday this week...

Above: ~ Remembering what our winter was like last year when the snow was light and the skies were beautiful.

Why oh why (!) would anyone NOT enjoy the winter scene in the last photo so much more when comparing it to the dark and more dreary sky filled "ick" snapped in the two photos located above this anyway?

Why do people hide out in Florida at this time of year and not revel in this mighty and most beautiful season here at home?

I wonder, because in my own humble opinion, this is the type of scenery NOT to be missed, the scenery people also escape for winter vacations to ski and enjoy snow play.

We have it right here at home, why leave? It's all ......

So bright.
So cheery.
So lovely.
So...um wintry.

Okay, so I'm not preparing for a move right about now like last year, so heh, why not just bring it on already!

Seasonal changes out my window

"All the leaves are brown....and the sky is gray"

~ Mamas and the Papas

Seasonal changes are occurring faster than the speed of sound in our general area.

After a good leaf raking last weekend, the landscape is becoming fairly brown, gray, bleak and barren outside this window.

Rushing winds no longer offer nature's wondrous musical lilt, with leaves rustling and branches swaying in rhythm to their melodic beats.

Instead, this week we experienced 60km winds and the sounds of their ferocious charge ripping through our forest, branches breaking in the background, a new winter tune for the season to come. Thank goodness we downed those 40 very tall, precariously leaning trees last spring!

Seasonal Changes Out my Window this week

Baby, it's getting browner outside!

The rain is falling, ruining the crispy and crunchy blanket of colorful leaves on the ground by brewing them into a slimy mush. Four garden rakes are awaiting a drier tomorrow for beginning the task of winter prep cleanup, bagging the mounds for donating to municipal compost trucks which will begin to pass by over the course of the next few weeks.

It's feeling quite similar to the weather we were used to when living in the Pacific Northwest; quite dank, dreary and dark. It's a day for the fireplace to crank up its flames, a good book resting in one's lap and a nice hot cup of tea nearby.

This is it folks, winter is on its way and quickly!

Seasonal Changes out my Window

In just over a week the colors of autumn have literally exploded around our home.

Seasonal changes are becoming more notable and obvious when glancing out my windows to our property views. We have truly been spoiled with the sensational autumn color palette on our property, let alone in the area surrounding us.

I thought to include the photo below today, one I was able to snap from my kitchen doorway with views to the back end of the property (we own three forested acres here). I think it's just marvelous to witness the beauty of nature just a mere step beyond the threshold of our doorway.

The past few days have seen frost on the ground and ice scrappers necessary for clearing icy windows in the early morning.

Today we're heading outdoors to gather multicolored leaves for pressing in old telephone books for our winter's store booty of nature items for both display and nature crafting. It will be interesting to collect all of the seeds, nuts, leaves and other assorted items we will find out there.

Seasonal Changes Out My Window

Autumn

Autumn is a second spring when every leaf becomes a flower.

~ Albert Camus

Over the next few months I plan to take a photo out of this window once a week or maybe two, observing changes as autumn turns to winter, and then again as spring appears and rolls all the way forward to next summer.

I feel it will be a lovely photo goal to witness changes in the seasons out of one specific window for me, and I hope you will enjoy it too. Care to join me?
